Village of McFarland residents speak up about new development concerns at public hearing
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Concerned residents in the Village of McFarland packed the municipal center Wednesday night for a public hearing meeting.
During public comment, they voiced concerns including losing parts of their community, homes, to new village developments through blight assessment.
Development consultants started the meeting by explaining the goals of the proposed plans, which is improving the value of the land.
“It’s my home and I want to stay there, and I don’t want to see my neighborhood, my home, and my neighbor’s homes destroyed by this development,” said Village of McFarland resident Elizabeth Bohusky.
Village officials explained the current plans do not recommend seizing any homes. The Village officials said the evaluations are a roadmap for development plans in the far future.
Lifelong resident Ron Larson said he is not against change, but the downtown area of the village is not the right place to be implementing new developments.
“The two to three block area downtown is the heart of our community, our history, and to lose that we are going to lose our character and its very important to retain that,” said Larson. “If we put up 2 and 3 story high density housing units, we are going to look like every other city in Dane County and beyond.”
There was no action on the agenda on Wednesday.
