Opportunities in used machinery market
A used machinery expert says the market is recalibrating.
Greg Peterson, founder of Machinery Pete, says most used equipment values are still coming off the record highs of the pandemic.
“If you’re using the livestock stuff now, like loader tractors, obviously used values and conditions for new sales are pretty decent with the strength they’ve seen there.” He says, “Whereas on the big grain side a lot more pressure built in ‘24 into early ‘25.”
He tells Brownfield he expects there to be opportunities for farmers this year.
“To me, it’s just a question of when do you get the spark. When do corn and beans go up?” He says, “Because when they do…bang! Auction, prices go up. Which is why I gently say right now in ’25, as you’re able, I think there’s going to be situationally, fantastic opportunities to be an aggressive buyer as others are pulling back.”
Peterson says the rise of online only auctions and dealer consolidation has accelerated how quickly the used equipment market reacts to influencing factors.
Brwonfield spoke with Peterson at the 2025 Illinois Soybean Summit in Champaign.
