Spotlighting economic development projects across upstate New York
This weekend on In Focus, we’re talking about economic development projects across upstate New York.
JoDee Kenney sat down with Joanne Cunningham, chair of the Albany County Legislature, to discuss the future of the former College of Saint Rose campus in Albany’s Pine Hills neighborhood. Cunningham said in addition to the state recently announcing it would create a workforce training center as part of the ON-RAMP program, there are several uses being explored.
JoDee was also joined by Albany Common Councilmember Owusu Anane, who is representing the city’s 10th Ward. Anane spoke about the opportunities this 50-acre parcel can provide, not only for the surrounding area, but for the entire city. Already, Anane said, businesses along the walkable stretch of Madison Avenue have seen renovations and improvements, making it a desirable place for companies to locate and people to live.
Also, JoDee spoke to Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente on plans for a 170-acre section of the former Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, known as the Triangle Parcel. Already home to Griffiss Business and Technology Park, Picente said the county is working to bring more tech firms to the region, as Micron Technologies moves forward with its multi-billion-dollar manufacturing plant near Syracuse. Picente said the site affords a unique opportunity for companies, as it remains an active airport with space to grow.
