Communication Breakdown: Mistakenly released inmate still on the loose

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – On Friday, Christopher Davis, a 31-year-old accused of involvement in a deadly 2022 shooting, was supposed to be en route to the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

“That word did not get to the driver,” says EBR District Attorney, Hillar Moore. “Through whatever lack of communication.”

As far as we know, Davis never arrived at the prison.

“This one particular prisoner was transported from where he was in East Carroll along with a group of DOC inmates that had apparently served their time and were being brought to a bus stop,” said Moore.

That bus stop is located just off Florida Boulevard.

Court records show Davis’s bail was set at $700,000. We are told it was never paid, and he was mistakenly released.

Moore detailed that Davis was being transferred due to at least one altercation with the guards in East Carroll Parish. He briefly detailed the danger of the situation.

“This surely is a security risk. It’s a homicide first of all – and you have relatives and family members that are concerned.”

Moore says that families have been notified. We attempted to speak with the Davis’s family, but they declined at the advice of their attorney.

Moore added that from conversations he’s had since the situation developed – nobody in Baton Rouge was even aware of Davis’s transfer.

“In speaking with the warden and the sheriff’s office they had no formal communication saying hey heads up this prisoner is coming back and he’s coming back because of these reasons, and he should be at your facility at this time,” said Moore. “So, no one was aware that he was out until they were notified.”

This isn’t the first time an inmate being housed in East Carroll Parish was mistakenly released.

In 2022, convicted killer Michael LeBlanc was also set free after serving time for an unrelated gun charge. He was later arrested again in New Orleans.
